Six Ways to Prepare for The Holidays


Now that Halloween is over and Mariah Carey is preparing to dominate the season, here are some simple ways you can prepare for the holidays and get into a festive mood!

Change the decorations

It’s finally time to put away the skeletons and pumpkins. What’s a better way to get into the holiday mood than to change up your environment? Making your home a cozy and enjoyable environment is always a must, but it’s especially important during the holiday season because it will make you feel so much happier. You can opt for placing beautiful wreaths and garlands around the house or grab your family and friends to set up a Christmas tree. If you would like to take decorating to the next level, a great tip is to include tons of lights and poinsettias. Most importantly, don’t forget the mistletoe!

Light candles

The winter season is all about getting together with the people you love and making memories. Interestingly, some believe that our brains associate certain smells with specific events and places, so lighting a candle can help you forever cherish the upcoming holidays! Moreover, candles are the perfect way to create a warm and cozy environment. Some great scents to try out this winter and festival season are any that include vanilla, cinnamon, cedarwood, sandalwood, or sage. My favourite places to buy candles are either Bath and Body Works or HomeSense

Holiday Drinks

Letting go of iced coffees for the season is hard, I know, but sometimes choosing hot drinks can also be a rewarding decision. If caffeine is a must in your diet, you can change it up and try a warm cardamom latte, mocha, or even a peppermint mocha. Otherwise, the best drinks, in my opinion, for the upcoming winter season are herbal teas which are very rejuvenating and healing during the cold seasons. Some great tea options include honey ginger, lemon, black, green, or peppermint. Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy some classic hot chocolate with mini marshmallows this holiday season!

Movies and Music

One of the best ways to get into the mood of the season is to watch movies and listen to seasonal music. Just like how in October watching scary movies is a must, you should definitely watch cheesy Christmas comedies or rom-coms every holiday season. Luckily, Netflix has multiple featured Christmas movies available to watch. Some personal favourites of mine are HolidateA Christmas Prince series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (not on Netflix), and The Grinch

Bake festive treats/meals

The way to anyone’s heart is through baked goods and treats. Just like scents, different flavours that are synonymous with the holidays can be a great method to transition into the season. Baking and cooking can also be very therapeutic which can help ease stress and anxiety for this relaxing and soothing season. Some ideas include baking and decorating Christmas-themed cookies, cupcakes, truffles, or macarons. You can also make this a joyous activity to do with your friends and family.

Donate

While the upcoming holiday can be a very joyful time, it’s also important to be considerate of those that are less fortunate and may not be able to experience these memorable times with their families in the same ways as you. Remember there are always food, clothing, and toy drives that you could be generous enough to donate to. Warm clothes for the winter or a small gift for less fortunate children could make this Christmas more special for them.

Ultimately, the holidays are a time for relaxation and spending time with those we love. All of these tips are a great way to enhance the festive mood but essentially what will make it more enjoyable is doing what you love. Rather than focusing on the material aspect of the holiday, you should definitely take this time to focus on and take care of yourself.
