Member Monday: Interview with Brianna Essue

For this week’s Member Monday for Her Campus Buffalo, I had the honor of interviewing Bri! Be sure to check out her weekly articles and follow her on Instagram: @bria.nyc.

Introduce yourself!

“Hi, I’m Bri and I’m from Brooklyn, NY. I am a senior majoring in psychology and minoring in criminology and this is my second year being apart of the HC UB team.”

Why did you join Her Campus?

“I joined Her Campus because I did the high school ambassador program and actually really liked it, so when I found out they had a chapter here at UB last year I knew I had to continue my HC journey.”

Did you always like to write? Where did your love for writing come from?

“I loved reading and writing growing up, my favorite genre to read being realistic fiction. In school I always had assignments that I put my own flair on to make it more enjoyable for me to write and sometimes I would create different stories at home just for fun. I also grew up writing in a journal and I had a wide array of content in there, from song writing to full blown stories.”

What does being apart of her campus do for you? What do you like to write about?

“I love to write about things that I am passionate about or incorporate my passions with things that I have read/watched. I also tend to psycho-analyze things that I consume and sometimes those turn into articles too, for example my articles about TikTok influencer culture being toxic/not toxic, or my favorite Gossip Girl character, Blair Waldorf. I love being apart of HC because I have met some amazing people along the way and I have the opportunity to use this medium to express myself.”

What is your major and what do you want to do when you graduate?

“I major in psychology and I’m not exactly sure what I want to be when I graduate. I have so many interests related to my field of study so I’m trying to figure it out as I go, I know it will definitely be within the field of social work.”

Do you have any hobbies?

“I have a bunch, I love to read, take photos, explore wherever I am, try new foods, etc. I love trying to expose myself to new things and figuring out what I like/dislike. “

What do you like & dislike about UB?

“I like that UB has become a home away from home since I’ve been here. It definitely is different from being in the city but I look forward to being on campus every semester. UB definitely taught me a lot of lessons and has been the place where I met lifelong friends and I’m definitely thankful for that.

Right now, I dislike that UB took away all of my favorite places to eat (Berts, Seasons, etc.) and how hard the professors are being when it comes to readjusting to in person classes.”

What are your goals in life?

“My goals in life are to be happy, healthy, content with life, and to travel the world. I want to have a job that helps my community and allows me to give others opportunities they would not be afforded otherwise.”

Who’s your biggest inspiration/role model?

“Honestly, I would say that one of my biggest inspirations is Rihanna because she is very passionate and multitalented, and she uses her influence and voice to create things that benefit everyone and stands for what she believes in like inclusivity and body positivity.”

What is something you wish you knew before that would’ve helped any situation you have been in?

“I would say to always trust your gut. I feel like we are taught when we were younger that we were not old enough to have intuition and the wisdom to trust your gut but as you get older, you should have confidence in your ability and be able to trust yourself in every decision you make. There have been so many situations I walked right into because I decided not to trust my gut the first time so definitely trust your instincts and if you make the wrong choice, learn from it and apply it to the next one.”

Do you have any advice for any women thinking about the field you are going into?

“I would say that being empathetic, understanding and having an open mind are very important when considering the field of psychology. You have to be able to understand people from all walks of life who experience things that could be drastically different from what you are familiar with and you have to be able to put yourself in other people’s shoes. Also, study well and believe in yourself :)”

Finally, which social media app do you prefer. Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, or Snapchat?

For communication, Snapchat definitely. For entertainment it’s between TikTok and Twitter.
